Statesboro - William Newton, 85, died Wednesday at Bulloch Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Statesboro and a retired farmer.

Surviving are two sons, James T. Newton of Glennville and Ernest Newton of Savannah; four daughters, Mrs. Neva Akins, Mrs. Sara Nell Ellis and Mrs. Eunice Riggs, all of Statesboro, and Mrs. Lila Dean Holland of Pooler; three sisters, Mrs. Charlie Allen and Mrs. Lizzie Allen, both of Statesboro, and Mrs. Carol Harrison of Savannah; five brothers, Reuben Newton of Greensboro, O. C. Newton of Midville, Berry and Steve Newton, both of Statesboro, and Van Newton of Darien; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Temple Baptist Church, with burial in the Eastside Cemetery. Smith-Tillman Mortuary of Statesboro is in charge.
