Josephine married Joseph Kusek on 30 June 1880 in Poland. They came to America the year after they were married and eventually settled on a farm in Platte County Nebraska near Tarnov. Two years later they homesteaded a farm 3 miles west of Duncan Nebraska; in 1894, they moved to a farm in Nance County and in 1904 to Valley County. In March of 1916, they retired to live in Ord Nebraska. Josephine "Sophie" and Joseph Kusek had fourteen children and one adopted child. Those who knew her remember her as having one arm and hand on the left side and a right arm only to the elbow. She still managed to raise a large family. The child they adopted became a consecrate of the Good Shepherd Home in Omaha, Nebraska. Her name was Catherine but they changed her name to Eva because they already had a daughter Catherine. "Eva" was known as Sister Elizabeth of the Seven Dolors.
