Ernst Fredrich Gottlieb Bartels, the fourth child of Friederich Christian and Anna Sophia Dorothea Bartels, was born 7 Aug 1861 in Schaumburg-Lippe. In May of 1869 he joined his family in their emigration to America, settling in Beecher (Will county), Illinois. They then made their way, in 1878, to Saline county, Nebraska, south of Tobias. On 22 Jan 1885, he was joined in matrimony to Ida Clara Guse at Zion Lutheran Church, adjoining old Zion Lutheran cemetery; this was the church that his father helped found.

Ernst and Ida had two children, Sophia and August. Ernst developed pneumonia and died, leaving his widow with two small children to raise. Ida next married Frederich Bartels, son of Ernst Bartels who was her first husband's uncle. Ida and Fred moved to Thayer county, where they had six children.

Ernst's daughter, Sophia, met an untimely death at the age of 20 from injuries suffered in a spill from a horse-drawn buggy. She is buried in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery in Thayer county, Nebraska, outside of Bruning. Ernst's son August, who served during WWI, died 3 Jun 1963 and is buried at Madison, Wisconsin.
