Thomas Underwood on Saipan, 1944.

Photographer W. Eugene Smith's notes:

"I believe that the images 6-8 on Roll 10 on July 8, final days of Saipan Invasion, were 4th Division Marine PFC T. E. Underwood (24th Bat.) of St. Petersburg, Florida. A portrait of a weary warrior who has been through one of the toughest days of his life. And still at the moment the picture was taken under fire."

Underwood served with Company B, 24th Marines, on Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He was killed in action on the latter island.

This is the gravestone of Cpl Thomas E. Underwood after I cleaned it and placed flowers and a flag at the site for Memorial Day week, 2010.

Cpl. Thomas E. Underwood's military marker is on the right, Cora Lee Underwood (probably his mom) is the taller marker to the immediate left, and George A. Underwood (probably dad) is the darker upright marker in the background. They are in the older section of the cemetery, two spaces in, on the south side of the cemetery service road. It is accessible from the east side of Sunnyside Cemetery, off 19th Ave North about 50 feet from where it intersects with 54th Ave. North. It is a pleasant little cemetery, not very large and it is indeed sunny with lots of big oak trees around providing a canopy of cool shade for visitors.

A closer picture of Thomas Underwood's marker, he is a patriot and true hero. The PH notation on his marker is a brief but important notation. For all time, this evidences his true heroism as being a recipient of America's highest military honor, the Purple Heart. (He was a double recipient.) The number of Purple Hearts awarded during World War II: 964,409. Cpl. Underwood was one of those brave patriots who gave his life for America. Number of brave American soldiers killed at Iwo Jima: 6,821. Number of Japanese killed: 17,845–18,375

Thomas E. Underwood, Florida, Corporal 4 Marine Div. May 12, 1945 - March 4, 1945. Grave is located on the south side of the cemetery road where it enters from 19th Street North just to the south of where it intersects with 54th Avenue North. Saint Petersburg, Florida , 2nd space to the left. He is buried next to Cora Lee Underwood, 8/4/1886 - 12/14/1946. I surmise she was his mother since she would have been 36 years old when he was born. She lived about a year after Thomas was killed in action. George A. Underwood is buried behind them both, presumably the father of Thomas.
