Joseph Vertrees 'J.V.' Smith, 89, of Oklahoma City, went to rest with his Lord on July 2, 2004. A retired businessman and aviator, he passed away at home with his wife, Susan, by his side. J.V. was born in Electra, Texas on August 16, 1914 and grew up in Ada, Oklahoma. A graduate of East Central College in Ada, he taught physics, math, and band before starting his own wholesale business, J.V. Smith Sales Company, and moving to Oklahoma City in 1935.

After service as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he returned and expanded into the retail discount business as Gibson's Discount Stores. In 1967, J.V. merged his business into Scrivner Bogart, a diversified food distributor, serving as President, Chairman, and CEO until his retirement from Scrivner in 1978. He continued his career in food service, owning and operating a group of Duff's Smorgasbord Restaurants, and was also involved in aviation related enterprises including Sky Sales Company and Tulakes Aviation at Wiley Post Airport.

J.V. was a very experienced aircraft pilot accumulating over 16,000 flight hours and owning numerous different aircraft during his flying career. He loved aviation and utilized his flying skills by traveling all over the United States as well as flights to South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean for business and pleasure. J.V. received numerous honors, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from East Central College in Ada. He was a long time member of the Quiet Birdmen and served as Governor of the Oklahoma City Hangar. He served on several boards including the Presbyterian Health Foundation, Beacon Club, First National Bank, First Presbyterian Church, and the Boy Scouts of America. He was also a member of the Men's Dinner Club, Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, Aviation Club, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and was a Lion's Club Life Member.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mabel and Dozier J. Smith, sister Margaret Jo Williams, and former wife Bobbie Lee Smith. J.V. is survived by his wife Susan P. Smith, his sons Richard V. Smith, M.D. and wife Jan, Randall Smith and wife Christine, Gerald L. Smith and wife Diane, daughter Marian Jacobson and husband Jeff; Susan's daughters Debra Bair and husband Jack Bair, M.D., Melissa Tausche and husband Ed, and sons John Goins, and Ronald Goins and wife Linda. He is also survived by his sister Sue Moulton, 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. J.V. was a kind and gentle man who will be greatly missed by his friends and family. A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
