Jack Sweeten, age 52, the assistant manager of the TG&Y store at 4675 Torrance Boulevard, Torrance, California, in the shopping center at Anza Avenue and Torrance Blvd, was killed during a store robbery by John Roy Maheu, age 29, on March 27 or 28th, 1973. The previous month, the same murderer had killed 4 theater employees during a robbery of the Rolling Hills Theatre at the corner of Crenshaw Blvd & Hwy 101 in Torrance, namely ushers George Cernik, 19, and Guy Brown, 29, projectionist Clyde Felts, 49, & assistant manager Lynda Rose Freeman, 31. Arrested April 2, 1973 (the same day of Jack Sweeten's burial), the murderer was found dead the next morning in his Torrance jail cell due to an overdose of barbiturates.
