IMPORTANCE IN AMERICAN HISTORY
Marguerite's father, Schoolmaster John Maglorie Carignan, was a friend of Chief Sitting Bull and also a confidant of Major James A McLaughlin, Indian Agent at Standing Rock Indian Reservation where Sitting Bull and his Dakota Sioux lived after 1883. In Dec. 1890, her father wrote a letter (on behalf of Liet. Bull Head) to Major James A. McLaughlin warning of unrest that caused McLaughlin to take the precaution of ordering Indian Police to surround and arrest Sitting Bull before dawn at his home. Marguerite's father-in-law, Louis Paul Primeau, acted as guide for the Cavalry command that was sent to be standing nearby to support the Indian Police after the arrest. Unfortunately, Sitting Bull and several Indian Police were killed during the arrest on 15 Dec 1890.

At the 1931 death of Marguerite's father, newspaper accounts described a great gloom had settled over Fort Yates Indian county; the Red man had lost one of his closest friends. One headline read, "John M Carignan, Indian Friend Dies- Friend of Sitting Bull Dies"
