Emil, his brother Ole, and his mothr were born in Nes (father in RIngsaker), Hedmark, Norway. Emil's father emigrated in 1879, and the family joined him in Deerfield in 1885. Life was difficult for this immigrant family, which soon grew to 6 children. When his mother Randine died, the chlldren were separated. Emil became a master cement worker, building many of the early sidewalks in Watertown. He was soft-spoken and highly intelligent, but often depressed. He and wife Emma Radke married in 1907 and raised f 7 wonderful children, all who remained close throughout their lives.Emil died from accidental drowning while fishing in the Rock RIver.
