There Is A Book About This atrocity Called (The Shelton Laurel

From "Junius and Albert's Adventures in the Confederacy" by Peter Carlson

Confederate Lieutenant Colonel James Keith and his men captured several pro-Union men in the mountain of North Carolina. Several of Keith's men protested against being used as executioners. "Fire or your will take their place," Keith ordered.
The soldiers fired killing four men and wounding one. A soldier stepped forward and finished that man. Five more prisoners were dragged into the bloody snow and shoved them to their knees. One of them was 13-year old David Shelton II.
"You have killed my father and brothers," Shelton said. "You have shot my father in the face. Do not shoot me in the face."
The soldiers fired. Again, killing four men, but one survived. David Shelton was shot in both arms, crawled towards the firing squad, pleading for his life. "You have killed my old father and my three brothers," the boy said. "You shot me in both arms. I can forgive you all this. I can get well. Let me go home to my mother and sisters.
The firing squad finished Shelton's life and then they executed the last three remaining men.
Killing completed, the Confederates dug a mass grave and threw the bodies into it.
