Gustavo Elmer Bloom was born 71 years ago on May 7, 1889 in Franconia Township into the family of Carl Johan Bloom and his wife Helen Katrina (nee Jonason) who were farming a few miles south of Center City near the Long Lake School.

As an infant of twelve days, he was baptized by Pastor J.F. Seedorf of Chisago Lake Lutheran Church on May 19, 1889. At the age of 15 years he was confirmed on May 8, 1904 in one of the classes of Pastor F.M. Eckman. He was in military service in WWI. He sang in the Chisago Lake Male Chorus directed by Paul Bloom.

From Center City, Elmer Bloom took for his lovely bride Anna Eleanor Lundeen, being joined in holy wedlock on June 9, 1928 by Pastor Oscar Sandahl.

The couple farmed on his home farm for several years. During this time an only child John was born. Shortly after in 1931, the family moved to the community of Cushing, WI. Here the son grew up in a family active in community affairs as the father served on the boards of the church, school, town, creamery and store.

In 1953 the Elmer Blooms returned to Center City and close to Church, purchased a home frequently supposed to be the parsonage. Here they have enjoyed a happy retirement in the community and near the church which were so much a part of their earlier years. For the past 6 years Elmer Bloom has been on the Board of Trustees of Chisago Lake Lutheran Church of Center City, Minnesota, serving faithfully as the Treasurer of the congregation, disbursing more than $200,000 for his church.

While Elmer Bloom's health was not really robust, he enjoyed participation in a variety of church and community gatherings. It was Sunday evening, Feb 26, 1961 that the Male Chorus of Gustavas Adolphus Lutheran Church of St. Paul, Minnesota, sang at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lindstrom. Of course Elmer Bloom was present. He heard among other selections, the singing of Halas Dem Der Hemma and he heard the word of God preached by his nephew, Pastor Vernel Lundeen, associate at Gustavo's Adolphus Lutheran Church.

As Elmer Bloom and his wife were driving home afterward, with their hearts echoing the songs of faith and home which they had heard, he slumped over the steering wheel of the car, quietly and without a word departing this life at the close of a beautiful Sabbath Day--the day of rest. He reached the age of 71 years, 9 mo and 18 days.
In addition to his parents who passed away years ago, Elmer Bloom was preceded in death by one sister, Anna (Mrs. Tvedt) who lived in West Virginia and by 4 brothers: Rueben, Paul and Wilhelm of Center City and Wendell of St. Paul.

Saddened by his death and surviving him are his wife, Eleanore of Center City and his son John, of Minneapolis as well as 2 little grandchildren who loved grandpa. Three sisters survive their brother: Elsa (Mrs. Wachholz) of Albert Lea, Mrs. Adelina Bloom of St. Paul and Lucille (Mrs. Arden Kolz) of Worthington. The only living brother, Oliver Bloom is from St. Paul. A large company of nieces and nephews will miss Uncle Elmer. Many other friends and relatives are among the sorrowing.

Interment followed the service in the cemetery of the church where Elmer Bloom was baptized, confirmed and married and to which he devoted so many years of prayer, interest and participation to the very end of his life. A graveside prayer was offered. H his nephew, Pastor Vernel Lundeen.

Funeral services were conducted from the Chisago Lake Ev. Lutheran Church, Center City, Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon March 2 pm with Pastor W. Burnett Benson officiating. Roger Crary, organist, Mr Leslie Johnson and Mr. Richard Bloom, soloists.

Pallbearers Donald Bloom, Bob Penshorn, Elwood Lundeen, James Drum.
