While playing policeman with his little brothers, between 4 and 6 pm last Sunday afternoon, Ruben bloom, aged 15 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas Bloom of Franconia, accidently shot himself in the head with a twelve gage shotgun and died almost 2 ½ hours afterwards. When his brother and his father reached his side he regained consciousness for a few minutes, but not long enough to answer their question with a distressed "yes".
It appears that Ruben and two younger brothers were playing policeman and somehow, he went into the granary and took down a shot gun that was hanging on a way, and shortly afterwards this gun was discharged in some unfortunate way or other, the shot striking him on the temple and tearing a hole on the left side of the head, which resulted in death. It is not known whether or not the gun was loaded at the time, but young Bloom was found lying outside the door leading to the granary. Mr and Mrs. Bloom were visiting with a neighbor and were not home at the time the accident occurred.
Dr Cheleen from Lindstrom was called but reached the scene of the accident too late to be of service, in fact there was nothing to be done.
The distressed parents came home, as soon as they had been advised about what happened and we can imagine their agony, when they found their son in a dying condition. Dr Stenberg of North Branch, the county coroner, was summoned last Monday and gave the verdict that the death was due to accidental charge of a shot gun. The funeral took place at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon from the residence, Rev F M Eckman of Center City officiating.
The Press desires to tender their heartfelt sympathy to the unfortunate family and especially to the distressed mother, whose grief must be unspeakable. Such an accident as this should serve as a warning to all young boys and parents and we trust that people in this vicinity will urge the greatest care in handling of all fire arms and by all means to arrange that no loaded guns be allowed on the premises.
All fire arms should be placed out of reach from the boys and old persons will do equally well and wise to use the greatest care in handling fire arms. This accident has saddened us all and while words are of no avail we trust that the grief stricken parents will place their trust in Him, who guides us from all danger. May the divine comfort of the Almighty succor the grief stricken parents and lead them from despair.
