Florence Russell Norris of Lynchburg, VA, died ten years ago on August 11, 2001, at the Appomattox Health Care Center in Appomattox, VA. This is a tribute to her Life.
Florence was born August 01, 1900 in Danville, VA, a daughter of the late Charles William Robins Russell and Mary Howard Spiers. She married the late Paul Drew Norris on July 30, 1921 and remained faithful to him until her passing..
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings (three younger siblings, Marie Beaudin of CA, and Howard Russell of VA) and a son-in-law, Edward E. Benson of DE.
Her mother Mary ran a boarding house in Richmond, VA and raised three children to adulthood. Without a father around, Florence, Marie, and Howard learned to do house repairs, woodworking, lawn work, etc. She also learned the feminine arts of tatting, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She had many talents and a very creative nature.
She was always interested in people and kept special relationships with neighbors and relatives, writing letters and cards to many of them- ever heard of a “Round Robin”. She was always willing to help others in need.
She was a collector of antiques, stamps, coins, autographs, etc. and interacted with many people who also collected. She also donated items to the Lynchburg City Museum.
An avid reader, her house was filled with books and magazines such as Life, Look, and National Geographics. Some were newspapers with historical interest such as the day after President Lincoln was killed. We grandkids always found interesting subjects to read and report on for school projects.
Florence was the family genealogist who was proud of her maternal-side heritage traced back to the English Royal Family. She would send a birthday card to her Cousin, the Queen, each year. She maintained the family treasures of old photographs, family Bibles, written stories and poems, and many letters.
She was futuristic thinking as she thrilled at obtaining the latest gadget (such as a fan, a Polaroid camera, a movie camera, push button phone, etc.) She had a dream of buying an old bus she saw in Madison Heights, fixing it up like the Partridge Family’s, and traveling the USA in it.
She is survived by two daughters, Annie Mae Benson of DE, Edna N. Wood, and son-in-law James “Pete” Wood of Lynchburg, VA; 6 grandkids; 12 great grandkids; and 8 great great grandkids.
