Citizens of Pella were shocked Thursday evening to learn that D. J. Ver Dught, well known resident, had died very suddenly a short time before at his home at Franklin Street. Mr. Ver Dught had been up town all the afternoon and left the office of his stepson, Dr. W.C. Ver Dught about 2:00 o'clock brought by Dr. Ver Dught who took him home in his wheelchair. Arriving at the home Mr. Ver Dught was being served coffee after he complained of feeling ill. A physician was hurriedly summoned and Dr. Ver Dught assisted getting Mr. Ver Dught to bed, his death occuried in a few minutes at 5 o'clock. While a heart attack was the direct cause of his death there were contributory causes, as he had been declining heath for a long time and his health had not been good for several years following an operation 3 ½ years ago when both legs were amputated. Still his death was unexpected to his host of friends. Mr. Ver Dught was born on a farm near Otley on January 1st, 1867, he engaged in farming until his retirement, 30 years ago, when he moved to Pella and has since resided here. He was twice married first to Mary DeBruyn who preceded him in death and later to Mrs. Minnie Verploeg besides his wife he is survived by four brothers and four sisters, as follows; William and Case Ver Dught of Pella; John Ver Dught of Prairie City; Pete Ver Dught of Oklahoma; Mr. P. Johnson of Pella; Mrs. A.R. Dunbar and Mrs. J. Witzenberg of Des Moines; and Mrs. John Van Haalen of Prairie City. Mr. Ver Dught was well like and has a large circle of friends who mourn his departure.
