Commander of the 11th Bombardment Squadron and acting commander of the 7th Bombardment Group. He was shot down by Japanese Zeros while piloting a B-18 Bolo (aircraft #36-338) near Surabaya, Java. He was able to crash land the plane and he and his co-pilot Russell M Smith were thrown clear in the crash but in their efforts to extricate the others (Straubel went back three times) both men were fatally burned and died the next morning in a Dutch hospital.
Austin Straubel International Airport, near Green Bay, Wisconsin, is named for him.
