Hubert and Mary were frequently visited by bears, so they kept a loaded gun near the cabin door. Mary carded her own wool as did most of the other pioneer women and would knit socks and mittens late at night for use the next day. Hubert walked a lot, again, as did most of the other farmers. He at one time carried a sack of grain on his back to Minneapolis to have it milled, walking both ways. He and his family walked to church also, first in the morning to High Mass and returning in the afternoon for Vespers. This was a day of rest? It probably ended with a ball game! How tired they must have been! Another story is related about the huge "ceremonial rock" in a pasture near the homestead that drew a crowd of Indians late each summer for a pow-wow. One year the surrounding farmers, tired of their crops being destroyed at this event, dug a hole and buried the rock. The suspicious Indians took this as a sign of evil spirits and never returned again. The family of Hubert was musically talented and had their own band using the barn for practicing. Music was important to many pioneer families and most of them could handle a musical instrument. It was a good source of entertainment, especially in the days of little and difficult to travel
