Mary Elizabeth Markle was born May 14, 1884 in Webber, Kansas; the daughter of George W. and Marge E. Markle. She was the seventh child of a family of nine children. There she received her education and grew to womanhood.

On November 19, 1901 she was married to Daniel William Ballard. The couple left Kansas shortly after for Pomeroy, Washington where they resided a few years and then returned to Kansas to remain until 1917. In that year they came to Wyoming and settled on the present ranch in the Dry Creek area north of Douglas.

Mrs. Ballard died alone in a fire in her home. Her husband had gone to Casper for medical treatment and came home to find the house completely gone and his wife with it. She had carried a few items out of the house, but apparently returned for more and got trapped.

She is survived by her husband; four sons, Melvin of Douglas, William of Leverett, Wyo., Carroll of Douglas, and Daniel in the army; a daughter, Mrs. Mable Dixon of Douglas; eight grandsons; four granddaughters, and three brothers and four sisters. One brother preceded her in death, having lost his life in an airplane crash.

Information was obtained from her obituary and cemetery records.
