floating timber into the Red River to
prevent Union gun boats from advancing.
The 13th engaged the Union forces in 1864
at Sabine Cross Roads, in a decisive
victory against the Federal forces. They
charged into Camden, and pursued Union
General Steel whose army fled the
onslaught of the Confederate forces, they
chased them and bottled necked them at
Jenkins Ferry, but after the Union dis-
troyed their own supply wagons, The Yankee's
successfully excaped to Little Rock & back
to New Orleans, never again, and until
the end of the war did the Union make
another attack on the Texan's, and thus,
East Texas was spared the burnings of
their towns, as Sherman forces had done
through out the South. Because of the ex-
perience of Texas soldiers, fighting, the
indians, War of Independence and the
Mexican American war, they were highly
feared by Union forces. The 13th were some
Proud Texan's, and us family researchers in Texas should always remember why we have old records to pick through.
However, it wasn't about us, we honor, our brothers in arms.
