Strausie was reared in Indiana and Missouri. She attended King City High School. Once enrolled at the University of Missouri she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority in which she remained active until she graduated. To further her education, she took her graduate degree in gymnastics at the Boston Normal School of Gymnastics which merged in 1909 with The Department of Hygiene of Wellesley College. She spent her early adult years teaching at the Kent Place School in N.J. She & her mother traveled to London for her wedding in 1908. The marriage license was delayed by two weeks in August so her in-laws had to return to the USA from Paris before the wedding took place. She and Allen stayed at the elegant Hotel Russell (now known as the Kimpton Fitzroy). After becoming established in China, she managed a large household of family, staff and missionary children. She home schooled those children & later became a teacher at the Hillcrest School in Nanjing. In the summers she and the Dr. took the family to the missionary resort of Kuling. During those 20 years the family traveled back to the USA in 1915 and 1922 while the doctor was on sabbatical. Of the week of March 20, 1927 Strausie wrote: "The events of this last week are beyond description. The only thing we can think of is our deep gratitude that we all escaped with our lives and reason. It was God's own providence that caused me to go on the gunboat (the destroyer, USS Noa) with all of the children. Otherwise, I feel sure that some of us would have lost our lives". Her life took an abrupt change with her return on the P&O Khyber to London & the Tuscania(2) to the USA after the uprisings. She settled in her husband's hometown of Houston, TX. Some years later while her children were being schooled in the East, she & the doctor entered & thrived in the real estate field as investors. She also purchased land and had constructed a summer cottage on Trinity Bay. Her social activities included membership in the Houston Garden Club. She particularly enjoyed playing bridge and gardening and she was a firm believer in athletic endeavors for children. Strausie passed away from an undiagnosed bleeding ulcer. (Bio by Jim Hutcheson)
