JOHN A. ANDRIST, (Swiss name was Johannes), the oldest son of Johannes and Anna Elizabeth (Hollemberg) Andrist of Boltigen, Bern, Switzerland was born February 24, 1842 in Switzerland and immigrated to America with his family of 6 siblings in 1858 on the ship New Orleans. The family arrived in New York and settled in No. Georgetown, Ohio for 10 years.

John A. enlisted in the Civil War on December 7, 1861 serving in Company I, 20th regiment from Monroe County,Ohio. He participated in many of the hardest fought battles of the war, Ft Donaldson, Pittsburgh Landing, Siege of Vicksburg and other engagements. He mustered out in December of 1864 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

John married Magdalene Buchs on September 17, 1865 in Columbiana County, Ohio. They had two children, Emma and Johney, who died as an infant in Ohio. John and Magdalene moved to Milton, Dodge Co. and then to Goodhue County, Minnesota and had 6 more children, John Jr., Louisa, Eliza, Emma, Emil and Lora in Pleasant Valley, Roscoe Township near Berne, Minnesota, the location of many Swiss families.

John and Magdalene moved to rural Mantorville, Dodge County on a farmstead and cleared the land for farming. He was a pioneer farmer owning 160 acres in Dodge County. Nearby are his brothers William of Mantorville and Godfrey of Berne. Andrist family members, daughter, Lora Stoffer and then his son, Emil Andrist ran the farm after his retirement. John was a member of the German Reformed Lutheran Church (Berne) and the G.A.R. He played the violin and lead many of his children to love music as well. Magdalene passed away in April 6, 1908.

John married a second time in 1909 to his first cousin Shannantely "Jennett" Andrist the daughter of Samuel Andrist on October 5, 1909. They lived most of their married life in St Cloud, Flordia, but often traveled back to Minnesota in the summer to visit.

John passed away in Mantorville, Minnesota on December 22nd, 1922 at the home of his daughter, Lora Stoffer. He was survived by John Andrist Jr. of Canada, Louisa, Mrs. Austin Mutchler of Mantorville, Emma, Mrs. Clyde Stevens of Seattle, Washington, Emil and wife Maude Andrist on the farm at Mantorville, and Lora, Mrs. John Stoffer of Mantorville. His daughter, Eliza, Mrs. H. Tibbetts died at age 26. John is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in the Andrist plot with lst wife, Magdalene and many of his children and grandchildren.
