CIVIL WAR VETERAN, JACOB ANDRIST dies in Minneapolis at University Hospital. Well known local resident and former Crookston police officer passed away September 11, 1922.

Jacob was born in Canton Bern, Switzerland on January 28, 1849 to Johannes and Elizabeth Andrist. He came to America with his parents and siblings on July 6, 1858 on the ship New Orleans and traveled to No. Georgetown, Ohio where the family stayed for several years.

He served in the Civil War from Lexington Township, Stark County, Alliance, Ohio, as Private, Co I 178th Ohio Infantry. He was wounded in March of 1865 in Kingston, North Carolina. After the war he went to Indiana and married Barbara Anna Buser on August 21, 1871 at Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. In 1889 they moved west to Dodge County Minnesota where many of their Swiss family members lived.

Jacob and Barbara had seven children: Rosa in 1872, Charles in 1874, Frank in 1875, John "Jake" in 1877, Amelia in 1879, Elizabeth in 1882, Roy in 1888. They lived in Ada, and later moved to Crookston, Minnesota. Jacob served the Crookston area as a police officer. He also served in the Minnesota National Guard for several years along with two of his sons.

Jacob died September 11, 1922 in Minneapolis, he was one of the last Civil War Veterans in the state. The American Legion and Company M were represented at the funeral. A firing squad from Company M fired the final salute. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston, Minnesota beside his wife Barbara who died in 1916.
