The son of Jacob and Mary High, he was born and raised in West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County Pennsylvania, but in 1860 was a carpenter living with his family in Newville, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 7" tall and had black hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Newville August 8, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC August 17 as a private with Co. H, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry (60th Pennsylvania). On November 21, 1864, he was captured at Bealton Station, Virginia, and ultimately incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia. (The claim in the accompanying obituary that he was held in Richmond's Libby Prison is almost certainly not true as enlistment personnel were not placed into Libby Prison at that point in the war, although he may have been held on Belle Isle in Richmond.) Paroled April 9, 1865, he honorably discharged to date May 27, 1865. He is in the company register as "Alexander T. High."

He married Amanda Elizabeth "Lizzie" Finkenbinder, sister of William Finkenbinder (130th Pa Inf), and fathered the children you see linked below. He died in his home. His obituaries identify him by his middle name,
