John was born to James and Hannah (Stanfield) Simpson. On October 30, 1854 John became the husband of Mary Jane Oldden and father of John George Simpson (who died at birth), Harry Burling Simpson (who died at 3 months), Florence Perrine Simpson Prince McGann, and William Alonzo Simpson. John served in the American Civil War as Captain of the Pennsylvania Battery A, Light Artillery. He fought in the following battles: Fredericksburg (13 Dec 1862) Confederate victory; Mechanicsville (26 Jun 1862) Union victory; Antietam (17 Sep 1862) Union strategic victory; Gaine's Mill (27 Jun 1862) Confederate victory; and, Second Battle of Bull Run-Reynold's Division (29-30 Aug 1862). He died of typhoid fever just after returning home from the war. He was an engraver by trade.
