Had an attempt made on his life when an assailant attempted to stab him in the back. The knife tore a hold in the back of his heavy overcoat. He turned and grabbed the knife by the blade, which cut one of his fingers, causing it to stiffen.

He later received a snake bite on another finger of the same hand, giving him two fingers that would not bend. This became his trademark when pleading cases in front of juries.
