Walter Gray Jr., 80, of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Bloomington, died Sept. 10.

He was retired from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, where he had been a professor of health and safety for many years. From 1946 to 1966, he was athletic director and football coach at University High School in Bloomington.

He was past president of the Vigo County Fair Board and served on two presidential committees for traffic safety.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a 1941 graduate of Wabash College. He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Myers Gray; four sons, Charles Gray, Gary Gray, Peter Gray and Walter Gray III; four stepsons, Michael McCain, John McCain, Frank McCain and Thomas McCain; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were Monday at Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home in Melbourne. A private burial is pending at Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Indiana High School Hall of Fame in Richmond.
