U.S. Congressman. Moving to the Ohio Northwest Territory, he served under General Hull in the War of 1812. After war he was a farmer, an associate judge, (1825-32), appointed Indian agent at the Wyandotte Reservation in 1829 and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, (1828, 36, 43). He also established the town of Carey, Ohio and was the first president of the Mad River Railroad, in 1845. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. After his term, he retired to his farm until his death at age 82.
