GERMAN IMMIGRANT ARTISTS IN AMERICA:A Biographical Dictionary by Peter C.Merrill[1997]
A portrait artist who studied in Dusseldorf and Munich before immigrating to the US in 1842. He initially settled in Reading,Pennsylvania,and received instruction from Thomas Sully in Philadelphia.In 1859 he went to Texas,where relatives of his wife were living,and in 1861 was in Galveston.During this time he painted a portrait of San Houston.Because of the Civil War, he went to Havana and later to Europe,returning to the US in 1874.He was injured in a fall in 1876 and remained an invalid thereafter.Behne was talented in music and languages as well as art.
