Silas was the son of Vincent and Phoebe Ann (Rackley) Tidwell.

Silas was named for his maternal grandfather, Silas Rackley. His mother, Phoebe Ann Rackley, was the daughter of Silas Rackley & Dinah Manning.


Silas Tidwell married Rachel E. McMasters and their children were:
James K. Polk Tidwell, John W. Tidwell, Elizabeth Phoebe Johanna Tidwell, Justin Edd Tidwell, Joseph C. Tidwell, Zilpah Caldonia Tidwell and William Vincent Tidwell.

Five of Silas' brothers served in the Confederate Army. His son, James K. Polk Tidwell, also served in the Confederate Army, in the 2nd Tennessee Mountain Infantry Division.
