James Knox Polk Tidwell was the son of Silas Tidwell and Rachel E (McMasters) Tidwell Thompson. He served in the 2nd Tennessee Mountain Infantry Division of the Confederate Army in the United States Civil War. He was the father of Rose Bell, Vincent, and James William Tidwell.

James' daughter, Rose married Frank Dowden, son of Jesse Lane Dowden, who served in the 52nd Indiana Infantry of the Union Army in the Civil War.
