Former Mayor James Dies At 83

Edwin Ernest James, 83, 805 Rhode Island, Rock Springs, died at 7:15 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17, 1989 at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City where he had been a patient since Feb. 8.

James was mayor of Rock Springs from 1946 to 1958. During his administration, the first city sewage plant was built near the present Plaza Mall.

He became ill on Feb. 5 and was taken to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County and on Feb. 8 was flown to Salt Lake City for further treatment.

He was born May 1, 1905 in Rock Springs, the son of the late Thomas Alma and Margaret Syme James. He attended schools in Rock Springs and was a Rock Springs High School graduate.

He also attended the University of Utah.

He married the former Margaret A. Lange on Oct. 14, 1930 in the Salt Lake City Temple. He owned and operated the Superior Lumber Company in Rock Springs.

James was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. James was past president of the local Lions Club and was district governor of the state. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for his service.

He was a member of the Mountain States Lumber Dealers Association and had received a lifetime membership award in November of 1988.

He was a member of the board of directors for the Rock Springs National Bank at the time of his death. In January, he retired as president of the board of Sweetwater Federal Savings and Loan where he had been the only president since 1935.

He served a mission in the Australian mission for his church. He had positions of counselor in the bishopric and served also as stake president and his wife served as stake and regional dance director.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Rock Springs; four daughters and sons-in-law: Joan and Daron Dewey, Rock Springs, Carol and Bill Lindsey, Bountiful Utah, Elaine and Russell Homer and Marilee and Alvin Vlam, both of Sandy, Utah; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Services will be Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. at the LDS church, 2055 Edgar St., Bishop Joseph Lewis conducting.

Friends may call at the funeral chapel, 154 Elk St., Tuesday afternoon and evening until 8 p.m. and Wednesday until 10 a.m. and at the church from 11 a.m. until time of services.
