James Callen Instantly Killed in Auto Accident
Geyser - James Callen, well known rancher of the Arrow Creek district was instantly killed last Friday afternoon when the car in which he was driving turned over on the grade near the former Hohn place north of Geyser. The two brothers James and Rufus, had been to Geyser and at about 4:30 were returning to the ranch. Rufus driving the car. Without warning the car swerved to the side of the road into the loose gravel, in getting it back into the road the car swerved to the other side hitting the bank and tipping over, pinning James under the door in such a manner as to crush him to death, instantly. Rufus escaped with a minor cut over his eye.
Mr. Callen came to Montana in 1886 and located near Ft. Benton. Later in company with his brother Rufus he came to their sister's home, the late Mrs. William Braun, making his home there for several years. Later taking up the ranch which the brothers still own and operate. He was 59 years old and unmarried.
He is survived by 3 sisters, Mrs. William Cecil and Mrs. L. Barbre of Great Falls and Mrs. James Ellis of Oregon State and one brother Rufus of Geyser. Other relatives are a niece Mrs. Eva Holzer of Stanford, Mrs. Dora Sundberg also a niece and John Braun a nephew both of Geyser.
Funeral services were held from the Braun home on Tuesday afternoon the Rev Dodds pastor of the Methodist church of Belt officiating. Burial took place in the McLeish Cemetery where his sister and other relatives were laid.
