Son of Adam Gaul and Harriett Rothwell. Union Civil War veteran, served with Company C, 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
Siblings: Sarah, John Frederick, Mary Elizabeth, Emily G., Adam, Harriet Rothwell, Jacob Henry, William A., Annie, Franklin P., and Laura Annie

Wife: Mary Elizabeth Free, married 1866

He enlisted April 20, 1861, mustered May 9 at Camp Harrison, Ohio, as a private with Co. C, 5th Ohio Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 19, 1861, to re-enlist that day with the three-year organization at the rank of 1st sergeant. He was promoted to commissary sergeant July 1, 1864, to 1st lieutenant of Co. H February 23, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1865.

The War Department never gave him the rank of major. Perhaps he served with the post-war regular army but rising to that rank given the seniority system in play is unlikely. Apparently, it was a honorary title bestowed upon a civilian.
