Mr. Humes was essentially a self made man. He was born on a farm in Woodcock Township. When four years of age, he was left fatherless by a stroke of lightning. At nine, he went to live with an uncle, George Doctor of Cambridge township. He attended Waterford Academy, went to school in Edinboro and graduated from Allegheny College in 1869.
In 1871, he entered the law office of W.R. Bole as a student and was admitted to the bar the same year. He began his political career stumping the county for Greeley in 1872 and since then has been regarded as a leader in the councils of his party. He was chairman of the Democratic county committee in 1873 and 1874, doing work that turned the tide from Republicanism to Democracy.
In 1882, he was unanimously for the state senate and defeated Hon. A.B. Richmond by about 400 votes. In 1886, he was renominated for the state senate and was defeated by G.W. Delamater in an exciting campaign. Since then, he had devoted himself in the practice of law.
Mr. Humes was married to Delia F. Lowry, a daughter of Judge Thomas J. Lowry of Conneautville, Feb. 11, 1874. She died Feb. 17, 1905.
