Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in St. Paul's Episcopal Church for Dr. R. D. Hightower, 51, of 961 Stephenson, a prominent Shreveport physician.


Dr. Hightower died at 1:55 p.m. Saturday at Doctors Hospital.


He had been in orthopaedic practice in Shreveport since 1962, coming here from Texarkana, Tex., where he started practice in 1959.


Dr. Hightower's hospital staff memberships included Doctors Hospital, Schumpert Sanitarium, Confederate Memorial Medical Center, Highland Hospital, Willis-Knighton Hospital, Bossier General Hospital and P&S Hospital.


He was an associate professor of orthopaedics at Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport, chief of orthopaedic service at Confederate until 1970, chief surgeon at Shriners Hospital 1966-67 and a consultant in orthopaedics at Barksdale Air Force Base.


Dr. Hightower was a member of the Shreveport Medical Society, the Louisiana State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Louisiana Orthopaedic Association.


He received his B.S. degree from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1949, and an M.D. degree from L.S.U. School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1953.


After serving a rotating internship at North Louisiana Sanitarium in Shreveport (now the Doctors' Hospital) from 1953 to 1954, he went into general practice in 1954.


Dr. Hightower served his residency at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas and McKinney, Tex. and the Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas from 1955-59.


He gained certification of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1962 and was designated a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1965. He was licensed to practice in Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas.


He is survived by his widow; his mother, Mrs. Ray Hunt of Arcadia; and a son, Robert E. Hightower of Knoxville, Tenn.


Officiating at the service will be the Rev. James Buckner, pastor of St. Paul's. Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery.
