Ferd died April 5, 1996 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife, Lottie (Gierada) Chmielnicki, brother Alfred J. (Charlotte) Chmielnicki, sister Olga T. (Stephen) Chobot, nieces and nephews Dennis Chobot, Patricia (Chobot) Myers, Karen (Chmielnicki) Kopicko, Laura (Chmielnicki) Dubiel, and Paula (Chmielnicki) Phaneuf, as well as numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Ferd grew up in Detroit, graduated from Chadsey High School in 1937 and then the University of Detroit Law School in 1941. Following law school, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the European theatre as a Judge Advocate General Corps officer during World War II. Upon leaving military service, he entered the private practice of law. As a general practitioner, he handled such diverse cases as family law, real estate, wills, trusts, estates, and bankruptcies. He became corporate counsel for Detrex Corporation, handling business and environmental matters.

Ferd had no children of his own. He dedicated his life to his work. He was known for his physical fitness pursuits: walking and bicycling. He was an entertaining raconteur who amused his friends and family with stories about his life adventures, most of which were greatly embellished for entertainment value.

Ferd, along with his wife, established the Ferd J. and Lottie Chmielnicki Scholarship at the University of Detroit-Mercy Law School, which provides financial assistance to 2nd and 3rd year students in the School of Law. To qualify, students must intend to pursue a career in Corporate or Environmental Law.
