On April 7, 1945, near Gottingen, Germany, 1st Lt. Newell F. Mills Jr (service # O-827247), and his wingman, went missing in their P-51D aircraft; United States Army Air Force; 354 Fighter Squadron; 355 Fighter Group.
In 1947, remains thought to be those of Newell F Mills, Jr were exhumed from a village cemetery in Varrigsen, Germany and received burial and a marker at Plot D Row 11 Grave 52 in the Ardennes American Cemetery near Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium. However, on Nov. 28, 2011, it was announced that forensic evidence, including DNA, identified the remains as belonging to another pilot shot down at the same place and day, Army Air Forces 1st Lt. Stephen L. Pascal, 20, of Hollywood, California. On Nov. 30, Lt. Pascal's remains were laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.
