La Salle Morgan Bates, 78, a prominent member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a longtime federal government worker, died of a heart attack May 27 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. Mr. Bates attended primary and secondary schools in Utah and Arizona, where he graduated from Phoenix Junior College. He later received a bachelor of science degree from American University. He was called to serve with the Mormons in France, Switzerland and Belgium in 1935. The mission lasted 2 1/2 years. During that time he met Marguerite Eva Chalet in Geneva. He came to the Washington area in 1938 to look for a job. Marguerite joined him in January 1939, and they were married later that month. Mr. Bates was employed with various government agencies, including the departments of State and Labor, from the late 1930s until his retirement in the 1970s. The Bateses became more active in the Mormon community during the 1940s. Mr. Bates held numerous leadership positions in the church, including president of the London District; president of the Servicemen's Branch in Frankfurt, Germany; bishop of the Silver Spring Ward; patriarch of the Chesapeake, Silver Spring and Seneca stakes; and sealer in the Washington Temple. He was also involved in recreation activities, playing catcher in the church's fast-pitch softball league.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Bates of Silver Spring; a daughter, Geneva Pincock of Kensington, Md.; a son, Daniel M. Bates of Monrovia, Md.; two brothers, Paul J. Bates of Mesa, Ariz. and Dean O. Bates of Tracy, Calif.; five sisters, Fern Bates, Dixie B. Wood and Wynne B. Facer, all of Livermore, Calif., Blanche B. McAllister of St. George, Utah, and Florence B. Polka of Phoenix; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A brother, Ivan L. Bates, died in 1972, and two brothers, Frank and Fred, died in infancy. Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave. in Silver Spring, and tomorrow from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the White Oak Ward Chapel, 500 Randolph Road. A funeral service will be held at the chapel at 11:00 a.m.
