Torrance Man Is Found Dead By Kern River
Bakersfield, Kern Co.- The body of Earl Gordon Ellett, 39, of Torrance, Los Angeles County, was discovered by two Oildale youths and Deputy Coroner Ross Jones said all evidence indicates the death was a suicide. Mike Morrison, 13, and Lloyd Crenshaw, 16, told Jones they were playing along the bank of the Kern River yesterday when they saw Ellett lying on the groundabout 100 yards east of the North Chester Avenue bridge near the river. The boys said when they got closer they could see the revolver held in Ellet's hand and the wound in his head so they ran for help. Jones said Ellet died instantly from a .22 caliber bullet wound just above the left ear. He reported a note, found in the man's hotel room, indicated he had been in ill health. It said: "I am down on the river bed. Come pick me up. I can't stand this pain any longer." Jones said Ellett register in an Oildale hotel on June 29th. He was an oil company employee ad a veteran of the coast guard. His widow and two children live in Torrance. The body was taken to the Kern General Hospital morgue where an autopsy was scheduled.
