United Airlines Flight 608 DC-6 Airliner crash took the lives of their daughter, Mae, and 11-month-old granddaughter, June, on October 24, 1947 near Bryce Canyon, Utah. The plane had caught fire during flight and crashed just 1.5 miles short of making an emergency landing at Bryce Canyon Airport. There were no survivors. It was the first crash of a DC-6, and at the time it was the second deadliest air crash in the United States.

Then just over 3 weeks later, a second commercial DC-6 airliner experienced a similar incident but managed to land the plane in flames. The Civil Aeronautics Board found the cause to be a design flaw in the DC-6 that allowed excess fuel to be sucked into the cabin heater system, which then ignited the fuel.
