Norman Kummetz, 93, of Columbus, died Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2200 25th St., with the Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a 9:45 a.m. family prayer service.

Interment will be at Columbus Cemetery with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice.

Norman Virgil Kummetz, son of Herman F. and olga H. (Tetzlaff) Kummetz was born May 22, 1918, at North Platte. Norman graduated from Linwood High School. He joined the United States Navy on Sept. 1, 1942 in Kansas City, Mo., where he trained to be a pilot. He was discharged Dec. 8, 1945, and was on inactive duty until 1956.

Norman was united in marriage to Doris Hood on April 21, 1950, in Columbus. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor for 37 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Eagles Club, VFW and the American Legion. He was an avid baseball fan, especially the New York Yankees.

He is survived by: sister-in-law Arlene Kummetz, of Genoa; niece Janet (Gene) Hansen, of Omaha; niece Janell (John) Cromwell, of Columbus; niece Jane (Joe) Stucky, of Oakland; nephew Wilbert Bill Kummetz, of Grand Island; niece Pat (Mark) Victorson, of Woodbridge, Va.; niece Gayle Edson, of Denver; niece Kathryn Edson, of Bazel, Switzerland; nephew John (Marilou) Edson, of Blair; and many great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: Wife Doris Kummetz, parents, brothers Owen in 1935 and Wilbert in 1960, infant sister Vera, sisters Eva and Audrey Kummetz in 1967, and nephew George Edson.
