SMITH, John Paul, 73, of Benwood, W.Va., passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011, in Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital, Wheeling.
One of eighteen children, John was born in Benwood on January 21, 1938, a son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Conrad) Smith. He was the retired owner of Smith Roofing and was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Benwood. Prior to owning and operating his own roofing business, he was an employee of the City of Benwood and Mansuetto Roofing Co.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Smith in 2008; two brothers, James "Jimbo" Smith and Robert "Buzzy" Smith; and six sisters, Mary Louise Greathouse, Betty Long, Theresa Risden, Jeannie Radcliffe, Paula Smith and Patricia Smith.
John is survived by his five children, John Paul "J.P." Smith, Jr. of Benwood, Robert Hubbard and his wife, Barbara of Bellaire, Ohio, William Hubbard and his wife, Joy and Bonnie Zelic and her husband, Michael, all of Benwood, and Bradley Hubbard and his wife, Connie of Glen Easton, W.Va.; three brothers, Alfred Smith, Mike Smith and Eddie Smith, all of Benwood; six sisters, Margaret Merryman of Shadyside, Ohio, Ellie McGill, Bertha Schrumpf, Patsy Taylor, Nancy Hawk and Sandy "Sissy" James, all of Benwood; seven grandchildren, Bobby, Ryan, Daniel, Kevin, Katie, Sarah and Casey Hubbard; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be held at 11 am, Friday, June 17, 2011 at St. Johns Catholic Church, Benwood, with the Rev. Bekeh Utietiang as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
