'Mixon', as he was called, was born in Ozark, Alabama, in a cotton field, as he use to fondly relate. After their family spent a year in Georgia, he lived and grew up in Walton County from 1921 on. The family lived four miles out on the Bob Sikes Road, west of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, where farming and livestock, as well as work away from the home, supported the family.

Mixon married Evelyn Hazel Roberson on Sept 15, 1947, in Andalusia, Alabama. They lived near her parents until after their first child was born; then a year or two in Pensacola, Florida, where their second child was born. Later, after a few years in Indiana, where the next four children were born, they had a house built in the Pleasant Ridge community near Mixon's parents on the Bob Sikes Road, where they raised their eleven children.
