Springfield Writer Dies In Florida
Miss Elizabeth Madox Roberts, 55, nationally known author, of Springfield, died in a hospital in Orlando, Florida, Friday, March 14, of what the attending physicians said was “a form of anemia.” Miss Roberts had often visited Harrodsburg, and collected here most of the material for her book, “The Great Meadow,” a story of pioneer life in Old Fort Harrod, which was a best seller after it was published, and the story gained additional fame as a film play.
Miss Roberts maintained a home in Springfield, where she spent her summers and most of the winters in Florida and California. Her funeral and burial were at Springfield. Besides her mother, Mrs. Mary Roberts, the writer leaves one sister and four brothers.
Miss Roberts achieved success as a poet, author of novels and short stories and as a magazine writer. She won the Fisk prize in 1921, the John reed Memorial prize for poetry in 1928, the O’Henry Memorial prize in 1930 for a short story, and the Poetry Society of South Carolina prize in 1931. She was honored by the National Writers Society only a few weeks before her death.
