Long Prairie Leader, Thurs. Dec. 11, 1952, p. 1:1. Former Resident Is Oregon Duck Hunting Victim. Robert Moore Drowns Tuesday in Mishap Near Salem, Ore. Robert Moore, 31, of Salem, Ore., son of Mr. and Mrs. Worth Moore of this village, where he was born and reared, drowned Tuesday in a river near Salem, the parents were informed in a telephone message received here late Tuesday night. At the time this was written yesterday afternoon, it appeared the body had not yet been recovered. While the accident did not occur during actual hunting, it must nevertheless be charged as a casualty of the season. A few days previous, according to what information is now available, Robert and a companion had been duck hunting. A gun had been lost in the river. Robert and his companion went to the river Tuesday in an attempt to retrieve the weapon with the use of an elector magnet. The boat capsized and Robert was drowned. His companion, whose name was not immediately available, was saved. Other details are lacking. Robert was born here Dec. 15, 1921, and grew to young manhood here. He was a member of the National Guard when the local company was called into service in 1941 just before this country's entrance into World War II. He served in California and spent 2 1/2 years in the Alcutian Islands before receiving his honorable discharge in November, 1945. On April 22, 1950, he was married in Berkeley, California, to Miss Helen Williams of that city. At the time of his death he was taking a pre-law course at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. He was a member of the Catholic church and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving his death are his wife; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Worth Moore of this village; the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Robert (Evelyn) O'Hara of Minneapolis, Virgil Moore of Ogden, Utah, Mrs. Per (Jean) Tredal of Osakis, Donald Moore of Long Prairie, Kenneth Moore of Portland, Ore., Luanne Moore of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Jacob (Phyllis) Barney of Ephrata, Wash, and Carol Moore at home in this village. Mr. and Mrs. Moore and daughter visited their son, Robert, last August, at which time other members of the family on the west coast also gathered there. Robert last visited Long Prairie in the fall of 1950.

Long Prairie Leader, Thurs. Dec. 18, 1952, p. 1. Body of Hunter Not Recovered; Search Continues. Services Of Many State Agencies Employed In Search. According to a telegram received Monday night by Mr. and Mrs. Worth Moore of this village, from their son, Virgil, of Ogden, Utah, the body of another son, Robert Moore, who drowned last week Tuesday, Dec. 9, in the Willamette River near Salem, Ore., had not then been recovered. Informed of the accident as reported in last week's Leader, Virgil went to Salem. As the days went on a without recovery of the body, he informed his parents that he was leaving Monday night for his home in Utah. Meanwhile, another son, Kenneth, who lives at Portland, Ore., was either remaining at Salem or keeping in daily contact with the search. According to Virgil, many Oregon agencies are uniting in the search. The civil air patrol has made numerous flights. The state highway department and the state police has been working practically around the clock. Radio broadcasts are being made every hour, encouraging duck hunters to be on the lookout. The hunting season in Oregon continues until Jan. 1. As related last week, Robert drowned when the boat he was in capsized. He and a companion were conducting a search with an electro magnet for a gun dropped in the river on a hunting trip a few days before. Robert's companion was saved in a manner not yet known but was so broken by the tragedy and shock that it was several days before he was able to give much of a story concerning the accident. Until the body has been recovered, funeral arrangements have not been completed. However, Mr. and Mrs. Moore here have been informed that it is the wish of Robert's wife that he be buried in the Golden Gate cemetery for veterans in the San Francisco or Berkeley, Calif., area. It is presumed that funeral services will be conducted at the cemetery there.
