PARTY AT HIGHLINE HONORS KATIE MUMMA
Mrs. Katie Mumma was honored with a reception at the Highline Nursing Home on the occasion of her 89th birthday.
Arrangements were made by her two sons and their wives, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Mumma, East Wenatchee, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mumma, Kirkland. Her daughter, Mrs. E.F. Nelson, Oroville, was unable to attend.
Among the more than 50 guests were Mrs. Mumma's grandchildren, Dave Mumma, Kirkland; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Campbell, and two great-grandchildren, Randall and Leatha Campbell, Wenatchee.
Mrs. Mumma was born Feb. 16, 1882, in Nebraska, where she was married to Fred K. Mumma in 1900. They came to Washington about 35 years ago and lived first at Oroville. They moved to Redmond and on to Seattle, where Mr. Mumma died in 1959.
In 1962 Mrs. Mumma came to Wenatchee to make her home at the Highline Nursing Home.

SHE RECITES BIBLE CHAPTERS

This afghan, 41/2 by 6 feet, took three weeks to make but Mrs. Mumma told the girls she was "ashamed to say" it took that long because she's produced others in less time. The girls are among Free Methodist youth who have been visiting nursing home residents, and who were impressed with Mrs. Mumma's many sewing projects and ability to recite several chapters of the Bible.
Her memory for biblical passages has impressed Free Methodist youth who visit perky Mrs. Beatrix Mumma at Highline Nursing Home.
They remember one time during prayer a Biblical phrase a visitor used triggered her memory for the rest of the chapter.
Mrs. Mumma says she can quote four New Testament chapters and 17 Psalms, but hat she has problems mixing some of the verses up now that she's getting older.
She will be 90 on Feb. 16--a birthday she shares with several relatives.
Her memory work, though, has made its impression on the Free Methodist youth--whose church group has been visiting residents at the Eastside nursing home.
Their Church emphasizes scriptural memorization.
How did she memorize so much?
"I used to put a Bible on my sewing machine," she says.
Ever busy with sewing and crafts, she says she still manages to reread the Psalms and New Testament four times a year.
Craftwork of all sorts brightens the walls of her room.
Afghans she's made are now in homes from Montana to Georgia.
A baby item she made ended up in India, where a woman sent it to a missionary.
Friends say that Mrs. Mumma is not only serious about her Bible reading, but that she also makes sure a portion of earnings from needlework and crafts goes to missions and to worship services at the nursing home.
Not a native of this area, Mrs. Mumma came west from Nebraska, living in Omak and Oroville, and attending the Free Methodist Church there. She lived in King's Gardens 1955-1962 before coming to East Wenatchee.

About 50 persons gathered at Highline Nursing Home Saturday to honor Mrs. Katie B. Mumma, who marked her 90th birthday Feb. 16.
Helping her celebrate were about 25 residents of the home and 25 others.
Relatives from out-of-town attending were her son, Mr. and Mrs. Fred F. Mumma and their son Dave of Kirkland; and a granddaughter, Mrs. Joyce Walton and daughter, Candi, of Kirkland. Also there were a son in East Wenatchee and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Mumma.
Guests were served ice cream, cake, coffee and punch. Mrs. Mumma received many cards and gifts.

A group of local ladies carried out a Valentine theme in birthday celebrations for 86-year-old Nellie Couch and Clara Lemm, both born February 1, 1887.
Also honored were 91-year old Marguerite Carpenter, born February 6, 1882; 84-year-old Elva West, born February 6, 1889; 91-year-old Katie Mumma, born February 16, 1882 and 93-year-old Minnie Landis, born February 20, 1880.
Cake with hearts on it and pink punch were served.

KATIE MUMMA
Katie B. Mumma, 92, East Wenatchee, died in a local convalescent center early Sunday morning following a sudden illness.
She was born on Feb. 16, 1882, at Tobias, Neb., and lived her early life there. On Sept. 12, 1900, she was married to Fred K. Mumma in Daykin, Neb. They farmed in Western Nebraska from 1910 to 1924 when they moved to Lost Springs, Wyo.
In 1928 the family came to Oroville, farming until about 1946 when they semi-retired and moved to Redmond.
Mr. Mumma preceded her in death in 1959. Mrs. Mumma moved to East Wenatchee in 1962.
Mrs. Mumma was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
Surviving are two sons, Clyde F. Mumma, East Wenatchee, and Fred F. Mumma, Kirkland; one daughter, Mrs. E.F. ((Velma) Nelson, Oroville; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Houck, Nebraska; four grandchildren, one step-granddaughter; ten great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and fifteen great-great-grand-children.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, one son, one daughter, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services are announced by Telford's Chapel of the Valley.
