From Civil War Military records:
George Gifford, age 22 of Pedee, Iowa, nativity Ohio; enlisted Aug 19 1862 into Co D, 24th Iowa Infantry.

Died of disease Jul 21 1864 Algiers, Louisiana.
No burial site listed.

George was the son of Burton Jonathan Gifford and Rebecca Worrall, who were married in 1833 in Washington County, Ohio. Burton appears in the 1840 U.S. Federal Census residing in Marion (township), Athens, Ohio, so it's possible that George was born there due to his 1840 birth year.

George married Anna A Buckman on 7 Oct 1862 in Muscatine County, Iowa. After George died, Anna married George's brother, Seth Gifford, on 13 Feb 1868 in Cedar County, Iowa. Twenty years later, she married Oliver Perry Smith.

George had 2 paternal first cousins who survived the Civil War. They were:

Alex M Gifford, age 31, same residence and nativity as George; enlisted Aug 13 1862 into same company. Wounded May 16 1863 Battle of Champion Hill, MS. Mustered out Jul 17 1865 Savannah, GA.

Owen Gifford, age 24, same residence and nativity as George; enlisted the same day into the same company. Discharged for Disability Feb 20 1863 Helena, Arkansas.

George, Alex and Owen were all grandsons of Abram/Abraham Gifford and Patience Besse, who married in 1788 in Massachusetts. Three of this couple's sons were Abram/Abraham, Jr., Alexander M. and Burton Jonathan, all born in Maine.

Alex was the son of Alexander M Gifford and Isabella King who married in 1822 in Morgan County, Ohio (Isabella's death/burial unknown; Alexander M. Gifford then married Catherine King in 1842).

Owen was the son of Abram/Abraham Gifford, Jr. (death/burial unknown) and Mary "Polly" Parker, who were married in 1829 in Athens County, Ohio.
