James Shemek, 44, who made his home in Duncan where he operated a filling station, died at 7:30 p.m. yesterday at the U.S. Veterans hospital in Lincoln where he had been a patient for the last six months. He was in ill health, suffering from gall bladder and liver trouble for several months before he was taken to the hospital.
The body will arrive at 6 p.m. today from Lincoln over the Burlington railroad and will be taken to the Gahan Funeral home where it will lie in state until tomorrow when it will be taken to the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Twardowski at Duncan. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic church with Rev. Fr. George Mikulski, pastor, officiating. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery and following the religious rites, Hartman Post No. 84 of the Columbus American Legion, will have charge of the military services.
Mr. Shemek was a veteran of the world war (World War I) and formerly was a member of the Hartman post. He served with Company K in the 355th infantry of the 89th division and was stationed at Camp Funston, Kan., until he was mustered out of service. Born at Columbus Jan. 4, 1895, he lived his life in this community. His wife, nee Miss Clara Twardowski, died 14 years ago and since that time he and his daughter, Imelda, lived with his mother-in-law at Duncan.
Besides his daughter and mother-in-law, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Martin Shemek of Columbus; four sisters, Mrs. Peter Mimick of Columbus, Mrs. Charles Micek of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Joe Zulkoski of Arcadia, Mrs. Lawrence Hilger of Cedar Rapids and six brothers, Henry and Eddie of Columbus, Frank and Joe of Cedar Rapids, Alvin of Fullerton, and Louis of Osceola. His father and two brothers, Alex and Thomas, preceded him in death.
