James Kell was born near Carlisle, PA in 1760 and moved with his father (name uknown) to Orange County, North Carolina around the age of 3. He served as a Private and Captain in the Orange Co., NC Militia during the years 1778-1782. He fought in the battles of Camden, Charlotte, and Lindley's Mill. After the war, James married Letitia KNEAL (possibly Neill) and raised at least 5 children (James II, Alexander, John, Elizabeth DUNN, and Cynthia SMITH). He lived in Pendleton District, SC and with the Cherokee in Rabun County, Georgia before finally settling near Ellijay around 1830.
