New Mexico Governor. After receiving a law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1861, he served in the Confederate Army as a personal guard to General Sterling Price, during the Civil War. After the war, he passed the bar, practiced law in Clinton, Missouri, served two terms on the Clinton Town Council and served in the Missouri House of Representatives, in 1876. Relocating to Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory in 1877, he practiced law and was involved in mining, cattle ranching and real estate development. He was a member of New Mexico Legislative Council in 1880 and the first Mayor of Santa Fe, (1891-93). In 1893, he was appointed as a Democrat the 15th Governor of New Mexico Territory, serving until to 1897. After leaving the governorship, he returned to his legal practice and former business interests until his death.
