Mountain View- Funeral services for Mr. And Mrs. Carroll Smith and their daughter, Faye, 2 were held here Wednesday. The family perished in a house fire at their home near Monette Tuesday.
Deputy Sherfif Bill Hook of Craighead County said the fire apparently broke out when Mrs. Smith attempted to kindle a fire in a wood-burning stove. She used either kerosene or tractor fuel, he said.
The bodies of Mrs. Smith and the child were found near the stove. The body of Smith, who apparently was asleep when the fire broke out was found on the bed.
Hook said a neighbor saw the burning house, drove to a telephone and called Monette firemen. The house had burned to the ground by the time firemen arrived.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith were natives of Mountain View and recently had moved to the Monette area.
Mr. Smith was a brother to Mrs. Greer Lancaster of Batesville and Mrs. Larry Fryman of near Huff. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Smith of Mountain View.
Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Mrs. Opal Clicks of Mountain View.
