Johnny was united in marriage to Darlene Zimmer on June 3, 1977, in Elizabeth, Arkansas. Johnny worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Arkansas State Highway Department for fifteen years and also worked as a carpenter. He loved spending time with family, hunting, being outdoors, and working on projects. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, and was a member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Darlene Smith, of Elizabeth, Arkansas; two sons, Johnny Paul Smith (Kila) of Rockwall, Texas, and David Eugene Shelley (Laurel) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter, Jaylene Cotter (Bruce) of Henderson, Arkansas; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three brothers, Don Smith (Linda) of Timbo, Arkansas, Gary Smith of Mountain View, Arkansas, and Hershel Smith of Mountain View, Arkansas; five sisters, Leona Maier (James) of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Lavone Fowler (Frankie) of Harrison, Arkansas, Lona Fay Lancaster (Clay) of Locust Grove, Arkansas, Hazel Smith of Mountain View, Arkansas, and Lavola Ann Fryman (Larry) of Batesville, Arkansas; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded by his parents (Harvey and Zola Smith), ten brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Elizabeth, Arkansas, with Bro. Warren Newman officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 P.M. until time of service at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Elizabeth Baptist Church in Elizabeth, Arkansas. Interment will be Thursday, September 14, 2023, in the Elizabeth Cemetery in Elizabeth, Arkansas. Pallbearers will be Darrell Zimmer, Mathew Zimmer, Michael Zimmer, Jonathan Masters, Daniel Smith, and Donald Smith. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of Barker Funeral Home in Salem, Arkansas.
